You thought I was worth saving, so you came and changed my life. You thought I was worth keeping, so you cleaned me up inside. You thought I was to die for… so you came and saved my life… These are the incredible words penned by Anthony Brown, of the gospel group Anthony Brown and Group Therapy.
Every time I listen to these incredible words I am reminded of the reality that the Bible says not many nobel or wise are called. This song paints a picture in my mind of God going through the trash looking for value in what others thought was trash.
Not olny do I see God looking in the trash, but I see Him picking up the worst of the trash and smiling. The look in His eye is priceless. He’s thinking, “What! They threw this in the trash. I can make so much of this”. He carefully puts it to the side and reaches back into the bin in hopes of finding more valuables. Each time He finds something different. Those standing around observing are saying, ewh, to everything He pull out. But with each new find His smile and excitement intensifies.
Finally, after hours of searching through the discarded trash He bags up all of his finds and attempts to walk away. Then just as He reaches down to grab His prize the owner comes out and says, “My trash is not free!” Suddenly, the dumpster diver is at a crossroads. Would He really be willing to pay for trash!
He looks over His prized findings one more time and says to the owner, “How much?” Seeing the opportunity to profit from what he thought was invaluable, he responds, “If you want it you’ll have to pay with your Son! Wow, what a challenging request. It hardly seems like a fair trade. His only son for some trash! But without hesitation, He says, “Ok”. He leaves His son behind and leaves.
How many of us can relate? How many of us can relate to being thrown away by a spouse, or an employer, or a parent, or a sibling etc? Some of you have always felt unwanted and unloved. But this song paints a picture that tells you that you have worth to God! This is what I see when I hear this song. I see God dumpster diving in the earth finding those who have been lightly regarded and thrown away by society. I see Him saying to us, I find value in what others thought was invaluable. He says, you are valuable to Me. So much so that I was willing to die for what others thought was trash!
He says, I can turn your ashes into beauty. If you have ever been rejected I pray these words find a home in your heart. You are valuable. God thought you were to die for!
